I was able to tour the waste water treatment plant today. It is the only facility of its kind in all of Dominica. The system serves 12,000 households in the greater Roseau area. Prior to its construction, most of the raw sewerage went directly to Dominica’s waterways.
The sewerage connections bring all the waste water to the Goodwill facility where it is screened
Like the Curren facility in Tampa, a big problem is the solid waste that is deposited in the waste water system
Skimming and Sedimentation
When filtration is complete, the waste water is diffused 300 feet from shore at a depth of 200 feet.
Ideally, the folks working with water would love to additional treatment steps and be able to diffuse further off-shore but are limited by resources. Integrating Watershed and Coastal Area Management has identified Roseau River as a ‘hot spot’ and may be a source of additional funding to expand the initiatives undertaken by DOWASCO.
